Outstanding Boarding Inspection 2013

Gordon’s has once again been judged outstanding in all categories: boarders’ safety, quality of care, leadership and management, and overall provision. In particular:

  • Behaviour is outstanding and the relationship between staff and pupils is one of mutual respect.
  • The quality of provision and care for boarders has an exceptional impact on the quality of their lives and boarders make exceptional progress.
  • The safety of boarders is central to all that the school does. Boarders feel safe and supported.
  • The views of boarders are central to the way the school operates and develops its practice.
  • Boarders have access to an extensive choice of high quality activities which enable them to acquire and develop new skills and knowledge.
  • Anti-bullying is high on the agenda. Because of this, there are extremely low instances of bullying within the school.
  • Boarding Houses and facilities are of high quality, well furnished, maintained and offer students a homely environment.
  • Routine monitoring of quality of practice is used to drive forward continuous improvement.

Head Teacher's Welcome

As parents we wish our children to grow up and live full lives as happy, successful, good people. At Gordon’s we want nothing less. More than a place of learning but a way of living, Gordon’s seeks to equip young people morally, physically and academically; to make their contribution to the wider world in the sphere they choose.

Officially listed as one of Britain’s outstanding schools by Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector Gordon’s is a unique non-selective state boarding school that recognises that a good education is not just about outstanding examination results but a thorough preparation for life; it is about developing character and confidence through great teaching and abundant opportunities to strive, do, make, perform and learn.

Founded on academic rigour, excellent pastoral care, ceremony and an enviable activity programme we insist on hard work, exemplary behaviour and relentless courtesy, at all times.

One of Britain’s most academically successful state schools, we have a proud record of commitment to the highest standards and put great store in the widest possible recognition and celebration of achievement and intelligence to nurture individual talents and promote the understanding in every pupil that we are all equally different.

However, the real judgement of Gordon’s is the pupils. All who visit are struck by the friendly, purposeful calm that pervades the school. This is no accident and is borne from self-disciplined, focused and appreciative young people. Young people who are ambitious to be the best they can be, able to think for themselves, with a firmly-held moral code based on personal responsibility, respect for others and the desire to serve the wider community.

I want Gordon’s to become one of the most successful state schools in Britain, not just for academic achievement but for the young people we develop and the difference they make to the lives of others.

We look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you to the school so that you can see us in action and appreciate the difference a Gordon’s education makes.

Warm regards

Eton Summer School

Congratulations to: Michael Broom and Louise Irvine in Year 12 who have won places on the Eton Summer School beginning in July. Eton College Universities Summer School provides 120 Sixth Form boys and girls of high calibre from maintained schools across the whole of Britain with a teaching and tutorial programme designed to promote interest in university studies. The courses are very popular and attract a high number of applicants each year, offering a chance to live & work in the college.

Louise, a keen linguist and actress, is hoping to study French and Spanish at Cambridge University, so will be discovering the delights of French literature at Eton this summer. Michael, who played Danny in the school production, is a passionate Engineer and will be following a course of Maths with Physics at Eton.As in previous years a number of Oxbridge dons sit on a panel to answer questions about applying to Oxbridge. Students are also given interview practice and help on how to write a UCAS statement. Getting on the programme is hugely competitive so well done Michael and Louise!

Nuffield Bursary

Congratulations to Kathryn Stephens and Cameron Hubbard for achieving a placement on the Nuffield Bursary at Surrey University this summer. Kathryn will be doing an electrical engineering project with a company called Vesta Wind Systems. This is an excellent opportunity for Kathryn as she wishes to study electrical engineering at university.Cameron will be working on an ecology based project with Surrey Wildlife Trust which will help develop his field study skills. This will prove very useful when Cameron leaves for university to study Marine Biology.

With the high number of applicants for a Nuffield Bursary this year this is a fantastic achievement; we wish Kathryn and Cameron well and look forward to hearing about their success in September.
