Orienteering

Orienteering is an exciting Inter-House competition at Gordon’s.

Orienteering involves walking or running whilst navigating around a course using a detailed map and sometimes a compass. The aim is to navigate in sequence between a set of control points and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.

Events/Competitions

27th-28th January 2018 - Charlton Chase, Seaford College; widely considered the premier night navigation team exercise in the South East of England.

Charlton Chase 2018

Charlton Chase is widely considered as the premier night navigation team exercise in the South East of England.

Teams of four young people (aged 15 – 21) undertake a course through the South Downs National Park, requiring navigational skills and team work if they are to succeed.

Gordon’s entered three teams, all in Y11 in the standard category. This event offers teams more choice on the points they visit, with them required to visit fewer main gateways during the eight hour night event. Teams are required to move at least 4kms per hour whilst navigating accurately. They are also awarded points for getting to their checkpoints and for tasks on route.

This year was the first time Gordon’s have entered this challenge and it proved to be a tough one! All our teams were outstanding in horrendous weather conditions (mud, rain and high winds). Two teams completed the course and the third retired due to a few navigational errors in the early stages! However, much was learned from the event and in true Gordon’s spirit… we will return again!
