Congratulations to the Year 7 A and B Hockey teams who put in great performances at the District Hockey Tournaments on Wednesday 14th March. Both tournaments were held at Salesians School Chertsey. In the A Team competition, the Year 7s captained by Hannah Hailu performed well in the group stages beating SJB and Heathside School with convincing victories. These victories earned them a well deserved place in the final against Sir William Perkins' School. This was a tough game with the score 0-0 after 5 minutes, however despite excellent play and determination the team lost 3-0. However congratulations to those girls who played, finishing Runners' Up.

A Team: Ellie Bradford, Zara Cracroft, Victoria Wright, Hannah Hailu, Lottie Roberts, Gemma Wood, Sophie Hay

The B team went one better than the As taking the District Title in convincing style. Captained by Grace Francis the team won all their matches with some great victories over Salesians, SJB and Sir William Perkins'

NW SURREY DISTRICT 7's

NW SURREY DISTRICT 7-A-SIDE RUGBY TOURNAMENTS

Once again this year Gordon’s played host to the District 7-a-side Rugby Tournaments. The tournament is open to the twelve affiliated schools in the district and competed for at under 12’s through to under 16’s level.

Going through the year groups, the year 7’s have set the standard by winning all of their games against nine teams. Without doubt, a good start to their time playing 7’s for Gordon’s.

The year 8’s, as expected were a formidable force throughout the afternoon and like the 7’s finished as District champions.

Unfortunately the year 9’s were certainly up against some particularly strong opposition and unfortunately after some hard fought battles left the competition in the semi-final stage.

The year 10’s were certainly up against it in the final against a very strong Heathside team who went on to win their age group.

Finally the Year 11’s had to battle hard and finished as outright winners just pipping Woking High to the glory.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank The year 11 and 6th form boys who refereed magnificently in the year 7, 8 & 9 competitions. A thank you must also go to Mr David Edmondson for asssiting with officiating duties in the older age groups.

The coaches, Mr Andrew Downey, Mr Jamie Sinclair and Mr Ron Campbell did a sterling job in preparing all teams.

A particular thanks to Mr Ron Campbell for assisting me with the running of the complete tournament.

And finally a big thank you to all parents who took time out to support the boys.

Hannah Russell puts down marker for London 2012 with stunning performance at British Championships

Sunday 4th March 2012
Article by Tom Degun at the Aquatics Centre on the Olympic Park in London

Hannah Russell sent a major warning to her rivals that she is targeting gold at the London 2012 Paralympics after she won the women's multi classification 100 metres backstroke in a European record on the second day of the British Gas Swimming Championships at the Aquatics Centre.

Hannah Russell sent a major warning to her rivals that she is targeting gold at the London 2012 Paralympics after she won the women's multi classification 100 metres backstroke in a European record on the second day of the British Gas Swimming Championships at the Aquatics Centre.

With a rapturous crowd behind her at the magnificent arena, where the Paralympic swimming event will take place in just under six months, the 15-year-old from Woking stormed to victory in a time of 1min 09.52sec to pick up 973 qualification points for the Paralympics meaning that she will now almost certainly make her Paralympic debut at London 2012.

"I am absolutely amazed," Russell said.
"I didn't know I had it in me.
"When I saw my time I was speechless.
"I couldn't believe it."

Russell's victory is a major success for Playground to Podium, a Sport England initiative, managed by the English Federation of Disability Sport, designed to identify and nurture disabled young people and disabled adults.

1st XI Ipswich Tour

"After weeks of suspence it was decided again that the First Eleven at Gordon's would tour Ipswich for the third time after having previous successes. The preparation for tour has been excellent with the side currently top of our Super 8 league on Wednesday afternoons.

The party of 13 left during break time on Friday 2nd March after completing their first command task of packing the mini bus. We arrived in good time for our first game vs Kesgrave High School. It took 20minutes to settle down as there were some stiff legs after the journey, but we soon found our stride and won comfortably 8-0. That evening consisted of recharging the batteries in the hotel pool and jacuzzi before loading up on protein at Nando's.

A healthy breakfast was consumed on Saturday before our second game vs St Josephs College, who are a traditional rugby school so we knew it was going to be a physical game. Our skill outweighed their strength and we won 8-1. Then the whole team watched a first class game at Portman Road as Ipswich beat Bristol City and then it was refuel at Frankie and Benny's before some entertaining ten pin bowling.

Sunday was always going to be our toughest test against Woodbridge Town FC. It was a close game for the first 20minutes but then some excellent individual play by the opposition led to us being 2-0 down at half time. Some tired boys came out for the second half but a extremely spirited effort kept it at the same score line.

I would like to thank Mr Gareth Hall for accompanying me on this tour and the biggest thank you must go to the 13 players who represented the school so well as always."

Year 8 Rugby 7s Winners

Our Year 8 Rugby 7s team took part in the City of London Freeman School tournament, and won first place in the festival competition against five other schools. Captain Tom Wood had an outstanding tournament. Unfortunately star scrumhalf Cameron McDonald injured his leg in the final game, so may not be fit for the District or County Championships this month.

SWIMMING

Girls County Individual Championships

0n Thursday 26th January 10 of our girls were entered into the Surrey County individual swimming championships held at Trinity School in Croydon.

All 10 of our girls either have been, or are, current club swimmers so were therefore aware of the calibre of competition awaiting them.

The girls competing were:

Lower Junior Category
Chloe Benfield 100m Butterfly
Lizzie Mosdell 100m Backstrole
Jess Fidge 100m Breaststroke
Megan Oakley 100m Freestyle

Junior Category
Megan Cliffford 100m Freestyle
Lucy Maurer 100m Backstroke
Emma Wolfendale 100m Breaststroke
Lucy Spruzs 100m Butterfly
Alice Russell 4 X 25m Individual Medley

Senior
Emma Maurer 100m Breaststroke

As usual the standard of competition was extremely high with a number of national swimmers competing. Again our girls gave a great account of themselves with a sterling effort from the year 7s in the lower junior category.

Lucy Maurer put in a great effort to finish third with a time of 1.14.53 in the junior backstroke. However the highlights of the evening were without doubt the victories of Alice Russell, who finished as county champion in the junior individual medley with a time of 1.15.61, and old campaigner Emma Maurer in the senior backstroke who also finished in first place with an impressive time of 1.21.53.

Well done to all girls who have now set the standard for the boys who compete in two weeks’ time.

NATIONAL BIATHLON SEMI-FINALS - CRYSTAL PALACE

The following pupils have been successful in being selected for the National Biathlon Semi-Finals to be held at Crystal Palace on Sunday 5th February 2012.

James Cumins, Henry Mooney, Sam Bannister, Emma Maurer, Declan Lawlor, Alice Russell, Lara Hockin, Lucy Maurer and Flynn Parker

This year the selection process for the competition has changed. In past years it was necessary to qualify through a regional (South of England) competition.

It was decided that this was not particularly effective as it had cost and time implications. The new system requires schools to enter current run and swim times on-line. Once all times are received a selection process by the governing body (MPAGB) is set up.

Gordon’s entered a total of 21 athletes; therefore to get 9 of those through to the semi-finals is quite an achievement.
We now look forward to our day out at the National Sports Centre hoping that we can progress to the finals.

SUB-AQUA AT GORDONS

PADI DIVING COURSES AT GORDON’S UNDERWAY

Saturday the 7th January 2012 saw the start of the first PADI sub-aqua diving course taking place in the school pool. Seven of our students have taken up the challenge and the feedback has been nothing but positive.

Both students and staff have all agreed that it is proving to be a worthwhile and enjoyable experience which will lead to a recognised qualification.

The course is being run by two members of the school staff who carry the top sport diving qualification within their field.

If you (parents, staff or pupils) are interested in joining a course, details can be picked up from me in my office.

Come along, give it a go. You could well be the next Jacques Cousteau.

Gordon's 1st team also played LVS in the 3rd / 4th place play off. Gordon's 26 - LVS 8.

YOUNG REFEREES SHINE AT SCHOOLS’ RUGBY FESTIVAL

Three year 10 referees from Gordon’s School provided vital support in order to enable the Primary Schools’ Tag Rugby Festival at Camberley Rugby Club to run smoothly. Ollie Kenworthy, Ben Dunkerley and James Edmondson volunteered at short notice to referee at the year 5 and 6 festival which had 14 teams from 8 local schools. The day before the festival there was a danger that there may be a shortage of officials but thankfully Gordon’s School came to the rescue, demonstrating the community spirit that keeps sporting flame alive within Surrey Heath.

The boys had recently completed their Entry Level Referee Award as part of their GCSE PE curriculum at Gordon’s School and the 38 games that they refereed between them gave them valuable experience towards becoming fully qualified rugby referees. Their confidence, fitness and empathy with inexperienced players was testament to their maturity and knowledge of the game. They deservedly received glowing praise from all the coaches, teachers and parents for their outstanding performance. They were also excellent role models for the young players to look up to. Mr Ron Campbell from Gordon’s School stated “I am extremely proud of Ollie, Ben and James, they have acquitted themselves superbly and been excellent ambassadors for their school”.

Girls Rugby

Rugby is a major sport at Gordon’s but this time it’s the girls who are leading the way.
Chobham Rugby Club hosted a rugby sevens tournament for local schools, five teams competed in the under 16 age group where the standard was impressive. The girls really got stuck in and have the scars to prove it. At the end our girls finished runners up in a very close game against Woking High.

Unfortunately we were unable to use our sixth form girls who regular players at the club.
Next term girls rugby is part of the period six programme where non contact tag is used to introduce the girls to the game, followed by tackling and full contact for those who wish to progress.

Gordon's Win Inaugural Sovereign's Cup

Saturday 17 September saw Gordon's host the inaugural competition between The Royal Alexandra and Albert School and ourselves, competing in both rugby and netball.

The competition was the result of a conversation between the headteachers of both schools who decided that rather than hold our normal rugby fixtures, it would be a good idea to include netball as well. It was also decided that there should be an overall trophy awarded annually. Subject to approval, the trophy will be known as the Sovereign's Cup, given that Her Majesty the Queen is patron to both schools.

The scoring would be an accumulation of points awarded for the five year group teams in both sports. Points awarded were 3 points for a win, 2 for a draw and 1 for a loss.

After some really close, hard fought contests in both rugby and netball, Gordons ran out as overall winners with the Royal Alexandra and Albert School scoring a total of 18 points (4 wins and 6 losses) and Gordon's scoring 22 points (6 wins and 4 losses).

Mr Andrew Moss, the headteacher presented the trophy to the captain of the under 16's rugby, Charlie Millard and the captain of the under 13's netball Chloe Dunne.

I would like to thanks Mr Edmondson and Mr Wickes for refereeing the rugby and also to Mrs Sewell for coaching and umpiring the girls netball.

Director of Sport
