Mathematics

The aim of the Mathematics Department is to ensure that all students understand and appreciate the importance of Mathematics.

Our passionate and experienced Mathematics team is committed to encouraging and inspiring the mathematicians of the future. Whilst we promote the use of technology, we believe that confidence in Mathematics must be built on the firm foundations of basic numeracy and algebra skills.

The Department is one of the largest and most successful in the school and we are proud of our excellent record of success at both GCSE and A-Level. Mathematics is a very popular subject at AS and A-Level, with a growing number of students choosing to study Further Mathematics. Many of our students also go on to study Mathematics or related subjects at university.

At Gordon's School, students are set by ability. Whilst we have many talented mathematicians, we realise that some students find the subject more challenging. As a consequence, sets may vary in size to allow more support to be given. At GCSE level, all students follow the Edexcel linear specification, the vast majority at Higher Tier level. Our most able students are given the opportunity to take part in the UK Junior, Intermediate and Senior Mathematics Challenges, with considerable success.
