Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
Young Enterprise – Year 10 and Years 12/13 (Sixth Form)
The Young Enterprise Company Programme requires students to set up their own real company, develop a business idea, and then produce and sell this, thereby creating a unique and fun platform to test their entrepreneurial skills. Experienced business mentors will pass on their expertise and knowledge to students during a weekly Period 7 session, and in addition, there are regular trade fairs, workshops and competitions verses other schools. Young Enterprise is open to all Year 10 and Sixth Form students, not just those studying Business courses. Participation can greatly enhance student CV's and UCAS personal statements, whilst developing communication, team work and critical thinking skills, all of which are essential for current studies and future employment.
Extended Project Qualification – Year 12
The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) aims to inspire, enthuse and motivate students by giving them the skills that universities look for through the encouragement of independent study. Students are given the freedom to study a topic in depth and produce a final dissertation, meaning it will stretch the more academic scholar.
The EPQ is a free standing AS qualification and is worth up to 70 UCAS points. This qualification is open to all Year 12 students and requires considerable commitment in order to achieve the highest grades. Students are expected to attend all the mandatory teaching sessions every period 7 on Mondays and meet with their supervisors at least once during each half term to discuss their project progress.
For much of the course students will work independently, although their progress will be monitored by Mr Grace and other teachers who will offer guidance and support. During the course there will be further lessons to develop the analytical skills of the students and to prepare them to write the final dissertation, which will be approximately 5,000 words in length. In addition to the dissertation, students will be required to complete a presentation and written review of their projects. Gordon's School follows the AQA 7993 EPQ specification. All Year 12 students who embark on the EPQ are expected to complete the final dissertation and qualification before the end of the summer term in the first year.
Higher Project Qualification – Years 10/11 (KS4)
The Higher Project Qualification gives students the freedom to study their own topic in depth and produce a written report or in the case of practical projects, a production (e.g. charity event, fashion show, sports event etc.) or an artefact (e.g. a piece of art, a computer game, a realised design). As part of this process, students will carry out research on a topic that that is not covered by their other GCSEs and they will be guided by a project supervisor during this qualification during a weekly Period 7 session.

Benefits of the EPQ
The course is not compulsory but it offers some significant benefits to those involved who will:
- pursue, in depth, one aspect of their A Level studies, which should develop their knowledge and understanding
- undertake a significant piece of research, which will be excellent preparation for university study
- develop their powers of analysis and expression
- have an excellent command of one topic to quote on their university applications and discuss at interview
- gain an extra AS Level in an increasingly competitive world.
Part of the final assessment asks the students to reflect on their experience and to evaluate objectively their own performance. Participation in the EPQ should enhance a student’s performance in all subjects and provide an excellent foundation for study at university.
