Everyone must be able to communicate in speech and writing as well as understand meaning in texts to participate fully in society. At Gordon’s School, the English Department is passionate about opening up new imaginative worlds for students through literature and exploring the fascinating possibilities of language.

Our aim is to instil in all students: a love of reading, a desire to discuss and debate issues that matter, and an enjoyment of using language in all its varied forms.

In English lessons, students are challenged by a wide range of canonical and contemporary literature to interpret and develop their own views. Non-fiction and media texts also figure prominently, not least to foster the ability to read between the lines to become a discerning citizen in today’s world. Students are encouraged to discover their own voice as they develop as writers and speakers, and many competitions are held to facilitate this end.

The English Department is proud of its academic record at A-Level with a dedicated team of professionals teaching A-Level English Language (AQA Specification, 7701/7702) and A-Level English Literature (AQA Specification A, 7711/7712). Every year students are stimulated to go on to read English degrees at leading universities. Meanwhile at Key Stage 4, we prepare students for two GCSEs in English Language and English Literature (both AQA, 8700/8702).
