EU Referendum at Gordon's School

Gordon's held their very own EU Referendum the day before the national vote

Inspired by the National Referendum, on Wednesday 22nd June the Senior Debating Team organised Gordon’s School European Referendum Day. The main part of this day involved all of Gordon’s staff and students voting on the topic of remaining or exiting the European Union.

Year 12 students, Henry Gray (leave) and Georgina Phillips (remain), undertook weeks of campaigning in the run up to the event and addressed the whole school on the day itself. Polling opened shortly after with a specially created booth on the parade square – the perfect position for canvassing!

Simultaneously, the senior debaters used the event to showcase Model United Nations. This included a Security Council meeting where a topic with potentially disastrous international consequences was debated. In the afternoon, the team then invited 36 Year 9 and 10 students to join them in a General Assembly where David Cameron’s own European Resolution was debated.

By the end of the day, 588 votes had been counted and verified and, with a 60:40 majority, the vote REMAIN camp clinched victory.

By the time you read this, you will know whether the staff and students at Gordon’s agree with the rest of the nation…
