Memorial Weekend - Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th January 2016

On the morning of Saturday 16th January, Gordon’s School were treated to beautiful winter sunshine for its annual Whitehall Parade; a proud tradition which the school has held for many decades.

Pupils from each of the nine Houses along with the 60 strong Pipes & Drums Band assembled at King Charles Street in full ceremonial Blues before marching off on parade past the Cenotaph to the statue of General Gordon on the Embankment.

Upon arrival at the statue, school Chaplain, The Reverend Denis Robinson, led the Memorial Service to commemorate the death of Victorian war hero and philanthropist, General Charles George Gordon.

A parade such as this through the streets of central London is a unique and much anticipated event in the school calendar. Once again all staff and pupils represented the school impeccably and remain a true credit to the legacy of General Gordon.

Thanks should also be given to all parents of the Gordon’s School Parents’ Association who organised transportation and marshalled the event with great efficiency. This year was particularly notable in providing extra space around the statue for wreath laying.

The Guildford Cathedral Memorial Service for the whole school took place the following Sunday 17th January. As renovation works had not yet begun on the Cathedral ceiling, pupils, parents and staff were able to fill the grand space to its capacity for the Service.

This years’ Sermon was given by the Bishop of Guildford, The Right Reverend Andrew Watson, in which he spoke about the life and work of General Gordon and how his principles and values are applicable today.
