Future Chef Competition

Chester Moore recently competed in the Local Heat of the Future Chef competition in Epsom. Whilst he was not successful on the day the experience has given him a wealth of new skills. Chester was required to cook a main and dessert in two hours with a total cost of six pounds. As can be seen from the photo of the winning student’s meal,  the standard of the competition is exceptionally high. The competition will be held again in the Summer Term and is open to any student who is aged 12 -16 years.

Freddie Rose was 2nd and Tabitha Butler came 3rd.  All students who took part in the event did an amazing job demonstrating both fabulous planning and skills.

Surrey Show Choir Competition

Gordon’s School Choir has been selected to go through to the live final of the Surrey Show Choir competition in Dorking on March 9th 2012. For the first round, we submitted a DVD of the Rhythm of Life choreographed in the style of the TV series ‘Glee’.

For the final, we have to perform 2 pieces to a maximum of 4 minutes. We may then be asked to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in late May. Rehearsals for this exciting event will take place on Thursday lunchtimes 12.45 -1.15 p.m. in the Recreation Hall, starting on 12th January.

6th Form Christmas Tea

On Tuesday 6th December the Sixth Form students had the pleasure of hosting the ladies and gentlemen from the Tringhams Day Centre, Gordon’s Singers and the Parish of West End and Bisley for a Christmas Tea. Prior to this our Sixth Form and guests were treated to the Carol Service rehearsal performed by students and staff from Gordon’s School. It was a lovely event and the Sixth Form really enjoyed hosting our guests.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOX APPEAL

We are extremely grateful to everyone who helped with the shoeboxes this year. When they were collected there was only just room in the van to fit them all in. Students helped to load them all up and discovered the final total was 151 – the most we have ever sent.  Mr Shurville from Samaritan’s Purse reassured us that the boxes would make a real difference to the children who would receive them and was very grateful that we had managed to collect so many.

If you missed the collection and have a shoe box ready to hand in, please make sure it goes to Augusta House as soon as possible and we will make sure it reaches the warehouse in time.

Many thanks again for your support.

Founder's Day

On Thursday 9th June 2011, 12 pupils from the School attended The Annual Founder’s Day Parade at Chelsea Hospital in London.

The reviewing officer was His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales. The Royal Hospital Founder’s Day is held on a day close to the 29th May. This is the birthday of Charles II as well as the date of his restoration as King in May 1660.

It is also known as Oak Apple Day as it commemorates the escape of the future King Charles after the Battle of Worcester (1651) when he hid in an oak tree to avoid capture by the Parliamentary Forces. The King was mindful of the part played by the Army in his restoration to the Throne and implemented the idea for a foundation of a home, or hospice, for his old soldiers.

The Architect is Sir Christopher Wren.
