CCF Army Section Field Day: Sept 2016

On Tuesday 27th of September the Army Section of the CCF spent the day training with The Royal Engineers at Hawley Lake. The morning activities comprised of 3 different training stands, they were as follows:

  1.  Command Tasks
The Command Tasks were designed to test the Cadet's communication, leadership qualities and teamwork. There were two different activities, the first the Cadets were blindfolded and had to erect a tent under the supervision of a leader who could see. The second team had to get equipment over an obstacle using various tools.

  2. Mine Detector
During this task the Cadets were instructed on how to use the mine detector and then taken to a lane where they had to clear a path through a minefield.

  3.  Infantry Foot Bridge
The final task was to construct a bridge to cross a river. The students were taught how to construct the bridge from its component parts. They then had to build the bridge and cross a river.

  4. Raft Building and Race
The afternoon training took place on Hawley Lake where the Cadets were given instruction on tying knots, lashings and construction of a raft. Each section was then given the equipment to construct a raft capable of carrying the section around the island on the lake.

Once the rafts had been constructed the challenge was to race around the island, with the first team to complete the circuit and dismantle the raft declared winners. The race was very eventful as some of the rafts were not well constructed resulting in them falling apart. Some team members were even forced to test their swimming ability in the freezing cold water.

The race proved to be very closely fought with the final result eventually being decided by how quickly the teams could dismantle their raft.

All the Cadets had a very enjoyable day out with our sponsor unit, The Royal Engineers. Many thanks to 57 Sqn The Royal Engineers for hosting our Cadets and providing an excellent day’s training.
