Six Hit Gold at St James’s Palace

On Wednesday 30th November 2011 six recent leavers, pictured here, met HRH Prince Philip to receive their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award at St James’s Palace. The former pupils were Henry Hughes, Gabrielle May, Emily-Jayne Ruddick, Joseph Hounsham, Mark Porter and Cameron Young.

A total of 300 young people were invited to the morning presentation from all parts of the country. The Duke also had some assistance from celebrities including George Alagiah OBE from the BBC News team.

For six awards to be presented at once is another fine achievement for our students, who all had to work hard to satisfy the five elements of the award at this level: A four-day expedition, a week’s residential placement, and the physical, skill and volunteering sections. The expeditions for these six students included Ecuador, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, mountain biking in Tuscany and horse riding in the Brecon Beacons.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award was founded by Prince Philip in 1956 and since then over 1.4 million young people have achieved their Gold Award. The D of E operates in over 126 countries (either as D of E International or with a partner). To find out more about the Award and how to become involved, pupils should contact Mr Fox in the CCF office.

In 2010-2011 the Gold Award took nine students to Ecuador in South America on an exciting, varied and challenging 4 week expedition.

Twenty four students went to Southern Norway with its clear blue lakes and rugged mountains on their Gold Expedition.

The group also conducted survival training with a Royal Marine instructor, kayaking in Hovden Lakes, Austrian traverse across a waterfall and white water rafting in Evje.

Eighteen students went to Morocco in North Africa to complete their Duke of Edinburgh expedition in the Ait Bougamez Valley. The group also experienced life in a Berber Village.
